I have observed something quite common, especially in the Nigerian design space, is that a lot of designers just want to go into it because they need money (although this is not a bad motivation), and they forget that it is a career.
Not many people enter the design space thinking of it as a career or profession. Perhaps because it is skill led/driven, it is easy to just focus on the moment and not think or approach it in a futuristic manner.
However, this is something to really consider as a UXer. Have you thought about the history of the profession? Because that’s the only way we can predict and understand the future. Have you thought about the career implications of this history? What is it going to be like in the next 5, 10, 15 years? Have you observed how frequently things change and what the future will be in the next 20 years?
That’s why my closing letter for now will be “Think in Decades” What’s your career plan for the next 10 years in the design industry. How do you intend to build up to that career goal?
Have a plan
What do I want to do? Do I want to freelance, get a job, what sort of company do I want to work for, what do I need to do to get there? etc. Just have a plan that is not based on the present alone. Have a plan for the next 5, 10 years. If you’re 22 now, have you imagined yourself at 32, 42? Would you still be designing? Just expand your mind to think beyond now. Have a plan.
